Today in class we began discussing the formation of covalent compounds, how to name them using prefixes, and how to draw their structures.
Today in class the studen.ts took a short quiz on naming ionic compound and writing their formulas. Afterwards we briefly discussed the formation of covalent compounds
Today in class we practiced naming ionic compounds by working through a series of practice problems in small groups.
Today in class the students tested 4 unknown samples to try and determine which were samples of ionic compounds, and which ones were covalent based on their observations last week.
Today in class we had a checking in through the use of a Kahoot quiz to see what progress students are making with naming ionic compounds. The results will allow us to sort the class it to groups that will allow us to better focus their areas that need work.
Today in class we practiced writing the names and formulas of Ionic Compounds through Sporcle and Kahoot.
Tomorrow, students will have a quiz on naming these compounds and writing their formulas. Use these sites to practice and study! http://www.sporcle.com/games/kmahoney35/give-the-binary-ionic-formula---1 http://www.sporcle.com/games/kmahoney35/give-the-formula-for-the-binary-ionic-compound---2 http://www.sporcle.com/games/RyanWitchey/Chem_Ionic http://www.sporcle.com/games/RyanWitchey/Chem_Anions http://www.sporcle.com/games/Brendzel/writing-formulas-of-ionic-compounds HW: Naming & Formula Mini-Quiz Tomorrow Today in class we expanded upon our skills with writing formulas and names of simply ionic compounds to include polyatomic ions
Today in class the students performed a series of experiments to compare and determine the properties of ionic and covalent compounds.
Today in class we further practiced how to name ionic compounds by identifying the ions. In addition, we practiced the reverse concept of writing chemical formulas for these ionic compounds when given their names by determining the formula needed to cancel out the charges of the ions.
Today in class we learned how to name simple ionic compounds and then work backwards to determine their chemical formulas from their names.
